Gone are the Good old days of writing

Ever wondered what happened to the Classic English in this day and age of text messaging and tweeting? There was a time when we used to rely heavily on the postal mode of communication, the good old letters and telegrams. Then we became ingenious and devised ways to ensure these communications travelled faster and brought to light speed posts and courier services. How could the innovative human stop there? The quest for the new and better continued and it gave birth to fax and e-mail communication style with the punch-word being instant communication. E-mails were lengthy and descriptive with demonstration of excellent punctuations, spellings and grammar. Soon we progressed to swift one-liner e-mails and the day and age of today when subjects like Text-Messaging (SMS) and Tweets (twitter.com) rule the roost. With this dramatized opening let me come straight at the concern that I want to share through my article today. Is good old e-mail marketing heading for its demise thanks to the growing use of social media platforms?

The impact and fruitfulness of e-mail marketing must not be challenged for the simple reason that it is the most effective way of reaching out to your targeted audience and one of the best ways of direct marketing. However, with more and more companies deploying marketing strategies through popular social media platforms such as facebook and twitter the focus has shifted from e-mail marketing campaigns. It is true that social media appears more interactive as compared to e-mail marketing services campaigns and instead of talking at customers (e-mail marketing), talks with them (social media). However, all of this is no way a barometer of added business which should eventually be the goal of any marketing strategy.

In conclusion, I would like to stress upon the fact that the good and the old should both be retained and judiciously mixed in a marketing campaign. Social media marketing and e-mail marketing can both co-exist and produce winning results for an organization. What say folks?

Most of us know that twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. In this article, we will discuss how small business can utilize twitter effectively.

Earlier in twitter, group following was not possible. On the basis of users feedback, twitter has launched new features Twitter List. It enables group relationships beyond following each other. Anyone can create and publish twitter lists, so if you have a new idea for one, just click “New list” in the sidebar of your Twitter account. Add accounts to a list using the “Lists” drop drown on a twitter profile page.

Twitter list has some incredible benefits for small businesses in how they can organize or otherwise endorse people they follow. There are no best practices for using Twitter Lists. However, we will share some great ideas to spark your imagination.

Twitter lists can be private or public and small businesses can follow any lists without resulting in an influx of people they follow. Twitter helps you to notice and noticing others in this competitive business environment. Twitter has a very fair and equal platform for everyone to connect to their desired audience or customer and engage.

Instead of becoming obsessed with the number of followers you have amassed pay attention to the lists you are enrolled on and see which associates you have attracted. We know few companies encourage employees to Tweet. This would be a healthy why to highlight and endorse ones association with the company. Does your business make use of VIPs or similar stars that could be a street team for your brand? Draw attention to them and they will highlight you.

Associate yourself with industry associations or peers. On Twitter, its collaboration not competition. What are you using twitter lists for? Share it in your blogs or comments! There has to be someone in your company who is great on twitting. Showing humbleness and embracing talent on twitter is a great service for your audience to help grow your audience.

There are more ways for small businesses could benefit from Twitter Lists. To know more about how twitter can be benefited for your organization read an e-book on Twitter Marketing.

This is part one of this article series. These days, everyone is talking about saving the environment, conserving energy, cutting down on carbon dioxide emissions, etc. Scientists are warning about the impending dangers of global warming and increasing temperature. Don’t you think every small step can help in going a long way towards conserving mother earth for the future generations? Let’s start with conservation of water.

You can cut down your water consumption by using less water for your bath (bucket bath consumes very less water compared to a shower bath). Stop using the bath tub because it wastes the most water. Turn off your water tap while brushing. Use a hand sanitizer sometimes instead of washing your hands every now and then with soap and water. Ensure that your toilet flush consumes only so much water that is required to flush it. You can cut this usage down by putting a small stone or a 1 litre bottle in the flush tank.

If you live in an area where it rains often, think of rain water harvesting. In many places, this method of storing water has been adopted with great results. You can use this water for your toilet connection. You can use it to wash your car, water your plants, clean your floor, etc. Use your other water connection for cooking, bathing and for drinking water. Use your excess cooking water (in which you boiled something) to water your plants instead of spilling it down the drain. Plants will gain from the mineral, vitamin rich water. Ensure that no water leakage or wastage occurs in your premises. A dripping tap is alone responsible for many hundred gallons of water wastage every year. So make sure all taps work fine. If not, call your plumber asap. Just apply your mind and don’t waste water. You will help the environment in which you live. Continue reading part two in this article series.

Blogging is no more done just for personal fun. A complete professional touch has been given to the theme of blogging. From a young school boy to an old retired entrepreneur, everybody is in awe of blogs. Some write and some just read. But everyone in the online world is somehow related to blogging. The corporate and the business world have developed innovative ways to garner traffic for their services and products through blogging. Online traffic is one thing that should be scrutinized carefully to ensure that your product or service is getting the desired publicity. With millions and millions of people on various blogging platforms, blogging is the next big thing to boost up traffic.

A Sweet Example

TechCrunch is a blog company that profiles startup companies, products and websites with a huge fan following with nearly 3,337,000 RSS subscribers. That’s Huge! It was started as a blog somewhere around 2005 and it already ranks 3rd in Technorati ranking. The traffic with its original and innovative ideas has attracted the technology crazy web surfers from all over the world.

You too can surely create a blog for your company or product and embed it on your website. Imagine the traffic you can accumulate if the blog becomes a hit online.

Blogs Work Your Style

Blogs generally enchant people. Visitors start trusting the information you give. Well-Timed blogs can work wonders for any product or service. Search Engine Optimizers use the tactic of putting up their blog using the hot topics going on in the market. Such blogs attract the attention of this traffic quickly.

The Interaction Factor

The interaction factor in blogs makes blogging a huge source of traffic. A blog can trigger any discussion. If your company has a blog, ignite discussions on it. Discussions garner huge traffic. People get involved in it and this helps in getting sustained traffic as people do visit the blog again and again to check the discussions. The more discussion based topics you put up, better will be the role of your blog as a huge traffic source.

Social Media World

Blogging can be used as a tool to generate traffic from social networking platforms. Twitter itself is known as a micro blogging platform. These social networking sites have a daily traffic quota up in the millions. If you are able to market your blogs here, these can be huge traffic generators. Blogs can be embedded with videos and presentations.

By exploiting these parameters, your blog can gain great visibility in the social networking world. Create topics for your personal or business blogs and get them on sites like Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn and see how virally they spread.

The short spicy nature of blogs captures huge traffic. Blogs with some spice on social bookmarking sites like StumbleUpon and Delicious etc.. catch huge traffic. Get your blogs on websites like these and you will attract massive traffic.

Blogs are Best in Diverting Traffic

Every personal or professional blog user knows how efficient blogs are in diverting traffic to the main website. You will find blogging platforms like Hubpages and Squidoo lenses filled with promotional blogs. This only explains how extensively blogging is being used to attract traffic.

Blogging can be a wonderful source for generating traffic. All you need to do is explore it with a professional mind.

Creating good content is not rocket science, but it is an essential skill to master. Here are some of my top tips that work well for me, and will for you too.

1. Have a purpose. Of course you need great content to bring traffic to your blog or website but there is something you must do first.

It’s essential to have a goal before you start writing anything at all. You need to know what you want to get out of what you produce, whether that’s to drive more visitors to your site or to educate and inform your market.

2. Focus on getting it right first time. Of course this doesn’t happen without practice, but take an example from a daily newspaper journalist. Their deadlines mean they don’t get time to write, edit, re-write and touch up their copy, so they have got to get it as right as they can first time round.

This is particularly important for any copy to your blog posts; they should be 95% right the first time you write them.

Entrepreneurs fail most often because they don’t realise how important speed and execution are. Being a perfectionist is not a good idea in business, good enough will outperform perfection every single time so do not waste time ‘perfecting’ your copy, just get on with it.

A bonus to this technique is that if you really focus on getting things right first time then you you don’t have to go back and fix them later.

3. Force challenging but realistic targets on yourself. It’s quality not quantity that counts here, so your goal should be to create and share that every single day.

4. Give sound bites, not manifestos. A really great example of this is Twitter – you have to put your point across in140 characters, or less,. That forces you to be succinct and to the point.

Most inboxes are overcrowded and your message is easily lost so make your emails short and punchy.

Save the big ideas for the right medium and time when your customers have the time to sit down and take it in.

5. Have a point of view. If you want people to buy from you, then they need to trust you, and to do that they have to feel they know you.

I know I say you have to have speed and execution, but it also has to have something of your own personality in there. People are interested in your thoughts and opinions on the topic, so don’t make it neutral and bland but state your views clearly as someone who has a genuine interest in the topic.

6. The Insiders Scoop. This follows on from the previous point, because in order to become an authority to your prospects and customers you want to make a real connection with them. People love to have the insider view, and you can give that to them, so tell them as much of your life and experience as you can.

BUT, it must have a point to it that is relevant to your market or product.

7. Always summarise! Back to school here. You remember with essays you were always told to ‘tell them what you’re going to tell them, tell them it and then tell them what you’ve told them.’

That is so true for content creation as well because you will make the greatest impression on your reader by repeating key points and making your message unmistakeable, and unforgettable.
